Contains three items: There are two letters: one dated 1842 to David Flook from Caswell Freeman in Jacksborough, TN, concerning the price of cattle; and one dated Sept. 3, 1861 from M.H. Flook at Camp Guin [?] to his brother. This letter discusses the selection of substitute soldiers and describes action involving Confederate generals Wise and Floyd in the Kanawha Valley. Attached to it is an 1863 certificate from Rockingham County exempting W. Christian Flook from military duty for having furnished Jos. B. Breen as a substitute in 1861. Both letters have been transcribed.

John S. Wise and Richard A. Wise were sons of Henry Alexander Wise. John S. Wise was born in Brazil in 1846. He attended Virginia Military Institute and fought with the cadets at the Battle of New Market. He graduated from the law department at the University of Virginia, was U. S. Attorney for the eastern district of Virginia, and served in Congress 1883-1885. He was a Readjuster and later, a Republican. He moved to New York City to practice law. John S.
